"THE OLD WATERFRONT" - ARTIST STATEMENT

THE OLD WATERFRONT

A documentation of the San Sebastian River in historic
St. Augustine by Scott S. Smith

Artist Statement: The San Sebastian River quietly hugs the western edge of our historical city. This river has long been a port to fishing trawlers, and the home to many hardworking craftsmen who built, maintained, and operated these picturesque vessels. The shores of this river are undergoing change and the traces of this proud heritage are vanishing. ’ÄúThe Old Waterfront’Äù was birthed from my desire to document this important part of St. Augustine’Äôs history. As development pushes forward the waterfront will forever be changed; the quaint charm of an aging wharf with its ramshackle shrimp boats is replaced by contemporary condos, marinas, and restaurants. Some of the places I have documented are now gone and all that remain are photographs and memories. This series began about eight years ago, knowing that some of these places alongside the river would soon be replaced.
